On July 19th, 2024, the first song I wrote with The Third Edge will finally get released! It's called "Maze of Lies".
This was the very first thing I brought to the band songwriting-wise, back in 2008. It's sort of my first transition into writing something between what I was used to playing before I joined the band, and what the band's sound was. Ray added the bridge before the solo, and the vocal melody.
This was the song that showed me how good Ray is at improvisation. I never knew he was making up lyrics on the fly pretty much every show, until one night we were playing a bar and I caught him singing about the fat guy at the bar who was heckling us, the painting on the wall across from the stage...things like that.
I asked him right after the song, "are you making up lyrics as you go?"
"I don't have lyrics for this one, yet."
We both had a good laugh about this.
A few years later, while recording the next batch of songs that would have been the third Third Edge album, he still didn't have lyrics, so I tried my hand at writing them. I sent them along to him, and he really liked them!
We recorded him singing these words, and it sounded really great!
Unfortunately, things sort of stopped before we could get all the songs done, and they never came out, which is a bummer, as there are a lot of cool songs there.
So, when Ray convinced me I should release these songs of mine, I re-recorded the song from the ground up, with new drums, guitars, bass, and tried my hand at singing it. I'm not Ray, but I gave it a shot. I think it came out really good.
There's a ton of energy in these riffs, and I love this song. There's also my solo, which is the first one (I think) that I really built and am pretty happy with.
I hope you enjoy it!
If you want, you should be able to pre-save and pre-order the song on your favorite streaming platforms beginning June 14th.
